Drawing skills are often required to work in fashion. But the diversity of this sector's branches offers jobs in which drawing is not an essential skill. Let's take a closer look at the different possibilities open to you, depending on your drawing skills!

Working in fashion: if I can draw

If you're particularly fond of drawing and have a talent for it, it's easy to find a career in fashion. This sector recruits people who are creative and imaginative.

The job of stylist (or fashion designer) is the one that requires the most drawing skills. They create the sketches and technical designs for the new collection, whether in ready-to-wear or luxury goods.

Textile designers also require drawing skills, as they work closely with the stylist. You'll need to be able to create and visualize designs using computer-aided design tools (CAD software).

If I have to perfect my drawing skills to be a fashion designer

Would you like to move into a creative career in fashion, but you're not very good at drawing? If you're determined and motivated, you can still find your way into the world of fashion design.

To do this, you need to perfect your drawing skills, so that you have a good pencil stroke and good visuo-spatial abilities. Ideally, you should take drawing lessons as early as possible, and practice regularly to make up for any shortcomings.

For students coming from generalist streams (L, ES, S), the prep school and mise à niveaux in applied arts are designed to offer intensive instruction to students who have not studied in this field.

If I can't draw but I want to work in fashion

There are many paths that lead to a career in fashion. If you're passionate about fashion, but don't know how to draw, there are other options to suit your interests.

  • Communication : you don't need to know how to draw to become an advertising manager or press officer. Writing and communication skills are sufficient.
  • Marketing: if you're creative but lack the drawing skills, you can work as a product manager, developing collection plans with the stylist.
  • Trade: a good level of language skills means you can work in the purchasing department.
  • Digital : if you can't draw but you're good at social networking, you can work in fashion and manage customer relations.
  • The law : If you're interested in providing legal advice, it's a good idea to put your legal knowledge to work in the fashion industry.
  • Logistics : This buoyant sector requires rigor and organization.

There are many ways to get into fashion, whether you can draw or not. You can use your other talents to enter the fashion industry!
