Winter is just around the corner... It's time to prepare your seasonal starter pack to face the cold, and the top priority is clothing. What materials should you choose, so you don't get too hot or too cold? Should you layer up? Discover our invaluable advice on how to be at the cutting edge of fashion and find the perfect winter outfit!

Respect the 3-layer rule

The cold is back! Sweater, dress winterThe only thing left to do is to get out of the closet. In winter, even the fussiest of us tend to pile on layers of clothing to keep warm. This technique is only effective if you follow a few rules, because if you exceed this clothing trio, you risk getting too hot and sweating easily. Humidity is our worst enemy when the temperature is close to 0.

The three-layer rule has already proved its worth, particularly with hikers, runners and skiers. So, how does it work?

1) The first breathable layer

The first layer (baselayer) is in direct contact with your skin, so you need to choose it carefully. It must be breathable to avoid the accumulation of perspiration and moisture, and that cold feeling. Here are our tips:

Fabric Synthetics: synthetics such as polyesters are excellent for wicking moisture. We also recommend thermal underwear made from natural fibers (soft, non-itchy merino wool keeps you warm without making you sweat). Cotton should be avoided, as it is not very breathable and takes a long time to dry.

Adjustment : Moisture cannot escape where the fabric does not touch the skin. So opt for a comfortable fit.

Depending on the temperature and weather conditions, you can adjust the properties of your base layer by choosing a model with long or short sleeves, a turtleneck or round neck, or a tight or snug fit. And don't forget to protect your neck!

2) The second insulating layer

The second layer (insulating layer) acts as an insulator. How to choose it?

Insulating material Warm clothing, such as a down jacket or a thick fleece jacket, is the preferred choice here. This layer needs to be both warm and breathable to keep you warm this winter. A down jacket insulates while providing the warmth your body needs.

Full coverage Fleece pants: opt for fleece pants to keep your legs warm too.

3) The third protective layer

The third layer (outer layer) is the most protective. Although often referred to as "rainwear", this layer protects against external elements such as wind and snow, which can easily turn cold. What are its characteristics?

Protection against precipitation Waterproofing: a perspiration-absorbing base layer can't keep your skin dry if rain or wind soaks into your clothes. It's best to opt for waterproof, breathable garments. Choose windproof jackets or a quilted coat. Don't neglect accessories: a pair of gloves, a hat, a scarf... You'll be warm all day long.

Breathable protection: the perspiration evacuated by your base layer needs a way to escape. If you play sport, wear a breathable shell, otherwise moisture can get you wet.

10 winter basics to have in your wardrobe

Layering several fashionable pieces will help you cope with the cold, but wearing clothes made from quality materials is all the more effective. We recommend a look in wool, cotton, cashmere, silk, linen, faux fur, suede or velvet. Comfort and style are guaranteed!

Here are the basics to have in your winter wardrobe:

1) A versatile winter coat Choose a high-quality, insulating coat, preferably water-resistant and oversized for fashion appeal.

2) A turtleneck sweater This is an ideal piece for chilly people, and can be worn in any color to brighten up the cold season!

3) A chunky knit cardigan For a cosy 100% look, this piece can be layered with others for added warmth, while adding elegance to the final outfit.

4) A sweater dress the trendy winter piece! Short or midi length, this dress can be worn with winter boots, moccasins or derbies and paired with a straight coat. In a sportswear version, the sweater dress is worn with trendy sneakers and a long or short teddy coat. In a chic version, it can be transformed into an evening dress and accessorized with a belt and a pretty blouse. This comfortable piece is ideal for a Sunday at home!

5) A suede skirt or jacket This piece is a basic for chic winter dressing. But how to wear it? Here's our advice:

  • Opt for an elegant midi skirt and long suede jacket. For an ultra-trendy look, wear a pair of heeled sandals and a figure-hugging belt.
  • For a preppy look, opt for a miniskirt paired with leopard-print ballet flats in the same shades as the skirt.
  • Pair a buttoned suede midi skirt with a black leather jacket. The materials create the perfect contrast for fall-winter.
  • Revisit the miniskirt with an oversized jacket and striped polo. A sporty-chic women's total look, complemented by a cap, suede handbag and heels.

6) A pair of thick tights If you want to continue dressing up with a skirt or dress, opt for opaque tights.

7) Jeans or thermal pants Waterproof to the seasons, jeans can be worn in summer or winter. You'll find baggy jeans, jeans with contrasting seams, colored jeans, leopard jeans, raw jeans and barrel jeans.

8) Waterproof or lined shoes Whether you're looking for boots, ankle boots or thigh-high boots, there's a wide choice of shoes to choose from. Choose comfortable models with thick, non-cotton socks to keep you warm in low temperatures.

9) A scarf and gloves Fleece gloves: a must-have winter accessory! Fleece gloves provide basic warmth. Gloves with waterproof protection are recommended. Mittens are also an option. For added style, choose a scarf to match your gloves.

10) A hat or bonnet Fight the cold with a stylish accessory. Trendy hat, cap or woollen bonnet, take your pick! A wool or synthetic cap works perfectly, and you can rely on the hood of your jacket to protect you from the rain.

Mastering pattern and color coordination

Winter allows you to experiment with different color and design combinations. This season is marked by shades such as dark brown, blue, red, orange and light yellow. It's also perfect for wearing deep tones like burgundy or forest green. These shades can be used as a base for your outfit.

Neutral colors such as beige, black and gray are essential. You can layer them to create a refined, elegant look. For example, a charcoal-gray coat over a light-gray sweater will create a subtle, on-trend contrast.

Bright colors can brighten up a winter outfit. A brightly hued scarf, hat or pair of gloves can add personality and style to your look.

Winter is the perfect time to play with patterns. Animal motifs, from leopard to zebra, take center stage on accessories, shoes, tights, coats and dresses, creating daring outfits. This winter, dare to mix prints: flowers with polka dots, stripes with checks... The key is to balance patterns with solid colors to avoid overloading the look.

Thanks to our advice, you'll now know how to dress for winter with the latest fashion! Choose comfortable clothes that keep your body warm without suffocating you, opt for quality materials and dare to mix and match this season's trendy patterns.
