How should I dress in winter?

Winter is just around the corner... It's time to prepare your seasonal starter pack to face the cold, and clothing is the priority. In winter, we dream of only one thing: staying warm in comfortable clothes with a nice cup of herbal tea in hand while watching Christmas movies. We prefer cozy clothes over style! However, whatever the temperature, it is possible to dress with class and put together an ultra-trendy winter look. So, what are the essential items to have in your wardrobe? Which materials should you choose to avoid being too hot or too cold? Should you wear multiple layers? Discover our valuable tips for staying on top of fashion and finding the perfect winter outfit!

Follow the rule of three layers

The cold weather is back! Sweater, dress winter, Tights and coats are just waiting to be taken out of the closet. In winter, those who feel the cold tend to layer up to keep warm. This technique is only effective if you follow a few rules, because if you exceed this three-layer rule, you risk getting too hot and sweating easily. Moisture is our worst enemy when the temperature is close to 0.

The three-layer rule has already proven its worth, particularly among hikers, runners, and skiers. So how does it work?

1) The first breathable layer

The first layer (baselayer) is in direct contact with your skin, so it's important to choose it carefully. To prevent sweat and moisture from building up and making you feel cold, it needs to be breathable. Here are our tips:

Fabric : Synthetic fabrics such as polyester are excellent at wicking away moisture. It is also recommended to choose thermal underwear made from natural fibers (merino wool, which is soft and doesn't itch, keeps you warm without making you sweat). It is best to avoid cotton, as it is a very non-breathable material that takes a long time to dry.

Adjustment: Moisture cannot be wicked away in areas where the fabric does not touch the skin. Therefore, opt for a comfortable fit.

Depending on the temperature and weather conditions, you can adjust the properties of your base layer by choosing a model with long or short sleeves, a turtleneck or crew neck, and a tight or loose fit. Don't forget to protect your neck!

2) The second insulating layer

The second layer (insulating layer) has an insulating role. How do you choose it?

Insulating material Here, we recommend wearing warm clothing, such as a down jacket or thick fleece jacket. This layer should be both warm and breathable to protect you from the cold this winter. Down jackets provide insulation while providing the warmth your body needs.

Full coverage outfit : choose fleece pants so that your legs can stay warm too.

3) The third protective layer

The third layer (outer layer) provides the most protection. Although it is often referred to as “rainwear,” this layer protects against external elements such as wind or snow, which can easily cause you to feel cold. What are its characteristics?

Protection against precipitation A sweat-wicking base layer cannot keep your skin dry if rain or wind soaks through your clothes. It is best to opt for waterproof and breathable garments. Choose windproof jackets or a quilted coat. Don't forget accessories: a pair of gloves, a hat, a scarf... You'll stay warm all day long.

Breathable protection: Sweat wicked away by your base layer needs a way to escape. If you are exercising, wear a breathable shell, otherwise moisture could make you wet.

The 10 winter basics you need in your wardrobe

Layering several fashionable pieces will help you beat the cold, but wearing clothes made from high-quality materials is even more effective. We recommend creating a look using wool, cotton, cashmere, silk, linen, faux fur, suede, or velvet. Comfort and style guaranteed!

Here are the basics you need in your winter wardrobe:

1) A versatile winter coat : opt for a high-quality, insulated coat, preferably water-resistant and oversized for a trendy look.

2) A turtleneck sweater : this is the perfect piece for those who feel the cold, available in a range of colors to brighten up the cold season!

3) A chunky knit sweater/cardigan : for a cozy look, this piece can be layered with other items for extra warmth, while adding elegance to the final outfit.

4) A sweater dress : it's this winter's must-have item! Whether short or midi length, this dress can be worn with winter boots, loafers, or derbies and paired with a straight coat. For a sportswear look, wear your sweater dress with trendy sneakers and a long or short teddy coat. For a chic look, it can be transformed into an evening dress and accessorized with a belt and a pretty blouse. This comfortable piece is ideal for a Sunday at home!

5) A suede skirt or jacket This piece is a staple for dressing chic in winter. But how should you wear it? Here are our tips:

  • Opt for an elegant midi skirt and a long suede jacket. For an ultra-trendy look, wear a pair of heeled sandals and a belt that accentuates your figure.
  • For a preppy look, opt for a mini skirt paired with leopard print ballet flats that match the colors of the skirt.
  • Pair a buttoned suede midi skirt with a black leather jacket. The materials create the perfect contrast for fall-winter.
  • Revisit the mini skirt by wearing an oversized jacket and a striped polo shirt. A sporty and chic total look for women, completed with a cap, a suede handbag, and heels.

6) A pair of thick tights : to continue wearing skirts or dresses, opt for opaque tights.

7) Jeans or thermal pants : Impervious to the seasons, jeans can be worn in both summer and winter. There are baggy jeans, jeans with contrasting seams, colored jeans, leopard-print jeans, raw jeans, and barrel jeans.

8) Waterproof or lined shoes : bottes, boots, bottines ou cuissardes…
