How do I find a work-study program?

Visit looking for a work-study contract during your studies can be complex. Here are 7 tips from ISAL, the fashion business and design school!

  • Planning ahead

The process of finding a work-study program is similar to that of a conventional job search. However, it's essential to take into account the rhythm of the companies and the start-of-school calendar planned by the training establishment. We recommend that you start your search at least 3 months before the start date of your apprenticeship or professionalization contract, for example in March, so that you can start work in July, with a view to starting your training in September.

  • Personalize your Curriculum Vitae

Employers often receive generic applications that lack personality. A good CV should match the needs of recruiters. It's better to spend time on one CV and send it to five companies for which the application matches the job requirements, than to send multiple irrelevant CVs.

  • How to write a cover letter

Like the CV, the cover letter needs to be personalized. It's important to explain why this company is a perfect match for your profile. The letter should be proofread as many times as necessary to check for spelling mistakes before sending.

  • Meet as many companies as possible

To find a work-study program, it's a good idea to find out which companies are hiring in the fashion, design, management and styling sectors. To do this, it's best to consult the websites of targeted companies online, their LinkedIn pages or their social networks. Recruiters can also be contacted directly.

Sites specializing in fashion companies, such as Fashion Jobs or Fashion United.

Chambers of commerce and industry provide invaluable information on companies hiring work-study students in the region, or on upcoming open days.

For the retail and commercial professions, it's imperative to go directly into the field with a stack of copies of your CV and offer your services to store managers. You can also send your CV to the Group HR department.

Meeting companies is essential! Professional events such as trade shows, forums and conferences are also great opportunities to establish contact and make yourself known.

  • Making unsolicited applications

The possibilities for exploration are endless! Most of the time, a work-study contract is concluded within a small company with fewer than 50 employees. That's why it's smart not just to target companies with a strong reputation or a familiar name.

Lesser-known companies are regularly looking for young work-study students. Unsolicited applications are therefore ideal.

You need to adapt the type of position you're looking for to the size of the company you're targeting: often, a communications project manager position is easier to find in a company of 50 people than in a large multinational brand (and you can find both!).

  • Boosting business

Once you've sent in your application, you need to be proactive. If you don't receive a reply within 5 to 10 days, it's a good idea to contact the company, preferably by telephone, or even on site or by e-mail, depending on the position, to find out how far along they are in their recruitment process, and to let them know that an application has been submitted.

  • Stay natural and yourself

When talking to recruiters, it's vital to be yourself. Recruiters know that candidates have little or no professional experience. Personality and interpersonal skills are therefore assets that help you stand out from the crowd.
