The role of the fashion designer
Fashion designer is one of the most emblematic professions in the fashion world. It's a career path for anyone who loves art, style and design, and wants to share their creations with the world.
A fashion designer is first and foremost a designer in the ready-to-wear industry or haute couture. He imagines, creates, designs, plays with lines, fabrics, shapes and colors. He's a magician who invents the designs for tomorrow's collections.
This profession has two complementary facets:
- The pattern maker creates patterns for garments. They are responsible for designing sketches and models, both on paper and on the computer. Computer skills such as CAD (computer-aided drafting) and computer-aided design are essential. He builds the volume model for men or women. He also researches the fabrics and various materials needed to create the product.
- The stylist is in charge of sewing. They bring a collection to life on a mannequin, and test prototypes before mass or individual production. They make any alterations and adjustments, taking into account the codes of the company employing them, the brand image and the theme of the collection.
Once the collection is complete, the pattern designer draws up summary sheets for manufacturers, indicating the characteristics of each garment. They monitor the technical aspects of the product and pay particular attention to the final cost.
The professional works several seasons in advance to keep up with fashion trends and consumer expectations. Shapes, materials, colors, measurements... everything evolves from one year to the next. A constant watch on the movements of society is therefore expected.
A wide range of skills are required: creativity, artistic flair, responsiveness, flexibility, persuasiveness, stress resistance, technical and IT skills.
